The UK and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) is the most extensive and valuable UK poker tour within the British Isles and, being sponsored by PokerStars.co.uk, attracts a huge entry at each event – many of whom have qualified for the tour through UKIPT online satellites.
The nine locations which host Season 2 of the UKIPT (2010/2011) has been chosen specifically for their cultural interest (yes – even Manchester!) and the venues used for the tour are among the best poker facilities in the UK and Ireland.
Each stop on the UKIPT consists of a Main Event with a six-figure guaranteed prize pool and a full schedule of side events – often ten or more! Participants in any of the UKIPT tournaments earn points for the UKIPT Leaderboard Challenge, which rewards the most consistent players with buy-ins and accommodation packages for the following UKIPT season. If you want to see a list of all of the stops, take a look at the UKIPT schedule here.
Qualifying for the UKIPT
As with all live poker tournaments, direct buy-ins are always available for the rich and famous, but for UK poker players who do not have the bankrolls to fund £500 buy-ins (over a grand when you include hotels, food, travel and visits to local centres of cultural interest) UKIPT satellites are the way to go.
Typically, PokerStars hosts a series of “package” satellite finals in which a seat at the UKIPT Main Event, hotel accommodation and spending money is included in the prize. The number of packages available depends on the amount of entries each satellite final receives, but often there are two or more packages guaranteed.
Buy-ins to these “package” satellite finals usually costs £100.00 + £8.50 (or currency equivalent) and again may be out of the reach of the ordinary man in the street. Therefore, PokerStars also host sub-satellites to the UKIPT online satellite finals, with buy-ins starting from just £1.10 or – if you are an existing PokerStars player – 500 Frequent Player Points.
