The PokerStars United Kingdom and Ireland Poker Tour (UKIPT) is enjoying a record-breaking second season as it builds on a successful inaugural tour of 2010. The opportunity to compete against some of the world´s leading poker players has drawn fields of many hundreds to each event – setting a record for the largest ever UK live poker tournament when 1,058 players competed for more than £½million at Nottingham´s Dusk till Dawn Poker Club in February 2011.
UKIPT Main Events
Each leg of the UKIPT features a £/€500.00 Main Event with the exception of Galway, where the €1,000.00 Irish Poker Championships are the feature of the tour, and London – where the £5,250.00 buy-in Main Event is the climax of the tour and coincides with the PokerStars European Poker Tour (EPT). All of the Main Events have six-figure guaranteed prize pools and much of the appeal of the UKIPT is that players can qualify for the events via small-stake satellites on PokerStars.co.uk. You can find the UKIPT schedule here.
UKIPT Side Events
Every stop on the UKIPT also includes a schedule of side events, a charity tournament and a super satellite to the next location on the tour. The conclusion of the tour in London is an absolute “pokerfest”, with previous GUKPT winners invited to compete in the EPT Main Event, and a further thirty side events which include the European 8 Game Championship and a new game – “Rivers” – which is played like Texas Hold´em, but where each player receives their own river card.
UKIPT Poker Stars
As the UKIPT is sponsored by PokerStars expect to see many leading European stars of poker attending the events. The UK and Ireland PokerStars “Team” consists of JP Kelly, John Duthie, Jude Ainsworth, Liv Boeree and Vicky Coren, and they will frequently be joined by colleagues from around Europe such as Vanessa Rousso and Bertrand Grospellier (France), Juan Manuel Pastor and Juan Maceiras (Spain) and the Belgian De Meulder brothers – Christophe and Matthias.
UKIPT Bigger Stars
Frequently, international stars from further afield compete in UKIPT events as well – irrespective of whether they are sponsored by PokerStars or not. Previous years have seen Joe Hatchem, Chris Moneypenny, Greg Raymer and Phil Ivey take part in the Main Event tournaments and the UKIPT has been the stepping stone for many UK poker players to make it into the big time. More than 60% of players who compete alongside these famous names have qualified for the feature tournaments via UKIPT online satellites, and this season it could be you.
